The Green Card is available digitally – making the lives of motorists easier
27.12.2024 | Release
From the beginning of 2025, the European motor insurance certificate, or the Green Card, can also be presented digitally on the phone screen, for example. This offers flexibility to transport companies and those who travel outside Finland by their own vehicle.
The Green Card is an international certificate of valid motor liability insurance. Motor liability insurance issued in Finland is valid in all countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) and in Switzerland, as well as in a few other European and neighbouring countries.
Until now, the Green Card has been delivered to policyholders in either paper format or as a PDF document that they have printed out for their travel. From the beginning of 2025, an electronically presented document is also acceptable, in addition to a printed Green Card.
- Authorities can no longer require a paper certificate in any Green Card area. However, just any electronic document is not valid. The digital Green Card is a PDF document provided by the insurance company to the customer, explains Janne Jumppanen, Director of the Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre.
Digitalisation strengthens the role of the Green Card as a document that makes everyday life easier for motorists. Insurance is valid in the EEA countries even without a Green Card, but obtaining the card can make matters easier in the event of a traffic accident, for example. In Finland, you can obtain a Green Card free of charge from your insurance company that has issued your motor liability insurance.
The Finnish Motor Insurers' Centre (LVK) is the party that ultimately safeguards the rights of a person who has been involved in a road accident and takes care of the consequences of neglecting the statutory motor liability insurance. The Centre has extensive international duties, and its members include all insurance companies that issue motor liability insurance policies in Finland.
